How are equal area projections of earth inaccurate?

There's always a tradeoff if you want to preserve some aspect of our spherical world while projecting it onto a flat surface. In the case of equal area projections, the preservation of area typically comes at the cost of distorted shapes and angles. One such example of an area-preserving projection is the Mollweide projection, pictured below.
